Create Your First Post-Purchase Funnel
Post-Purchase Funnels are multi-step upsell and downsell sequences that appear after a customer completes checkout but before they reach the Thank You page. They're full-page takeovers that let you present one or more product offers in a branching flow — if the customer accepts, you can show a follow-up upsell; if they decline, you can show a downsell alternative. Products accepted here are added directly to the existing order with no need for the customer to re-enter payment information.
Getting Started
From the sidebar, navigate to Post-Purchase > Funnels.
Click Create Funnel to open the funnel editor.
Step 1: Targeting
The first step determines which customers see this funnel and when it appears.
Audience Targeting
Choose between:
Targeting Conditions
The targeting system includes the same 30+ fields available in the Content and Upsell builders, organized by category:
Customer: Tag, Email, First Name, Last Name, Order Count, New Customer, Logged In Status
Order: Order Total, Product Count, Has Subscription, Has Gift Card
Products in Order: Specific Product, Collection, Product Tag, Product Vendor, Product Type
Shipping Address: Country, Province/State, City, Postal Code
Markets: Market, Currency Code
Discounts: Applied Discount Code, Total Savings
Traffic Source: UTM Source, Medium, Campaign, Content, Term
Integrations (when connected):
Match Type
Device Targeting
Scheduling
Optionally restrict when the funnel is active:
Step 2: Build Offers
This is where you design the actual funnel — the sequence of offers customers will see. Click Next to move to the Build step.
Understanding the Funnel Tree
The funnel tree is a visual branching diagram that shows every possible path a customer can take. It supports up to 3 levels deep with a maximum of 7 total offers:
Level 1:
Level 2:
Level 3:
Here's how the full tree looks:
Initial Offer
├── Accept → Upsell
│ ├── Accept → Upsell Accept Offer
│ └── Decline → Upsell Decline Offer
└── Decline → Downsell
├── Accept → Downsell Accept Offer
└── Decline → Downsell Decline Offer
Only the Initial Offer is required. All other positions are optional — you can create a simple one-offer funnel or a complex multi-step sequence.
Creating an Offer
Click the + button on any position in the funnel tree to create an offer at that position. This opens the offer configuration panel.
Product Source
Each offer needs a product source — where the recommended products come from:
Discount Configuration
Optionally attach a discount to make the offer more compelling:
Multi-Product Display Modes
When an offer includes multiple products, choose how they're displayed:
Page Layout Builder
Each offer has a full page layout that you can customize using the same drag-and-drop builder from the Content and Upsell builders. Click Edit Layout on any offer to open the page builder.
The default layout includes:
You can add, remove, or rearrange any of these components, and add additional content like headings, trust badges, or testimonials. The component menu and template library are available here just like in the other builders.
Managing Offers
From the funnel tree, you can:
Step 3: Save
The final step lets you configure the funnel's metadata and activate it.
Funnel Name
Give your funnel a descriptive name (e.g., "Premium Add-On Funnel" or "Sample Pack Downsell Flow").
Priority
Set the funnel's priority to control which funnel is shown when a customer matches multiple funnels:
Priority matters because only one funnel can be shown per checkout — the first funnel that matches the customer's targeting conditions wins.
Order Tag (Optional)
Enter a tag that will be automatically added to the order when a customer accepts any offer in this funnel. Useful for tracking and segmentation in Shopify (e.g., "post-purchase-upsell" or "sample-accepted").
Enable/Disable
Toggle the funnel on or off. A disabled funnel won't be shown to any customers, even if targeting conditions match.
Click Save to store your funnel.
How Funnels Run at Checkout
Here's what happens when a customer completes checkout:
If an A/B experiment is running on post-purchase funnels, experiment funnels are evaluated first. See the Experiments guide for details.
Analytics
Each funnel tracks performance metrics on the funnel list page:
Detailed breakdowns are available by country, device, customer type, and integration segments.
