Upsell Experiences

Create Your First Upsell

The Upsell Builder lets you add product upsell components to your Checkout, Thank You, and Order Status pages. Upsells display additional product recommendations to customers — encouraging them to add more items to their order and increase your average order value. Each upsell block goes through a layout/product source selection, then the same three-step flow: Build, Targeting, and Save.

Getting Started

From the sidebar, navigate to the upsells section for the page you want:

  • Checkout > Upsells — upsell components on the checkout page
  • Thank You > Upsells — upsell components on the thank-you page
  • Order Status > Upsells — upsell components on the order status/account page
  • Click Create Upsell Block (or choose a template from the template library) to begin.

Pre-Step: Choose Your Layout and Product Source

Before entering the builder, you'll be asked to make two important choices:

Layout and product source selection modal

    Upsell Layout

Choose how your upsell products will be displayed:

  • Product List — a vertical list of products, one per row. Clean and easy to scan.
  • Product Carousel — a horizontal scrollable slider. Great for showing several products in a compact space.
  • Progress Bar Upsell — a tiered progress bar with a product slider. Motivates customers to add more to unlock rewards (e.g., "Add $20 more for free shipping!").
  • Checkbox Upsell — a single product displayed as a checkbox toggle. Simple one-click add-on. (Checkout page only.)
  • Product Source

Choose where your upsell products come from:

  • AI Recommendations — products are automatically selected based on the customer's cart, browsing history, and purchase patterns. No manual setup required.
  • Collection — products are pulled from a specific Shopify collection you choose. You can set a maximum number of products and exclude out-of-stock items.
  • Recently Viewed — shows products the customer has recently browsed on your store. Keeps familiar products front of mind.
  • Upsell Strategy — uses one of your configured Upsell Strategies (rule-based product selection engines). See the Upsell Strategies guide for more on creating strategies.
  • Manual Selection — hand-pick the exact products you want to show. Full control over what appears.

  • Step 1: Build

The Build step uses the same visual drag-and-drop editor as the Content Builder, but pre-loaded with your chosen upsell layout and product source.

    Upsell-Specific Components

Depending on your chosen layout, the builder pre-populates with the appropriate upsell component:

  • Product List — a vertical product grid with customizable product cards showing image, title, price, and add-to-cart button
  • Product Slider — a horizontal carousel with configurable scroll behavior and card styling
  • Checkbox Product Offer — a compact single-product checkbox with image, title, price, and toggle
  • You can customize these components just like any other — adjust colors, fonts, card styling, button text, and more.

    Adding Surrounding Content

Upsell blocks aren't limited to just the product component. You can drag in any content component around your upsell — headings, banners, trust badges, review summaries, progress bars, and more. For example:

  • Add a Heading above your upsell: "You might also like..."
  • Add a Trust Badge row below for credibility
  • Wrap everything in a Layout component for multi-column designs
  • The Component Menu and Template Library

The component menu and template library work exactly the same as in the Content Builder. See the Content Builder guide for details on:

  • Browsing and searching components by category
  • Using drag-and-drop vs. click-to-add
  • Starting from a pre-built template
  • Using dynamic tokens in text fields
  • The Product Detail Modal

When a customer clicks on a product in your upsell, a product detail modal (popup) opens with more information about that product. You can customize the layout of this modal using the Modal Editor.

To access the Modal Editor, click the "Edit Modal" button in the builder toolbar. The modal editor lets you arrange:

  • Product Gallery — product images with thumbnail navigation
  • Product Title and Product Price
  • Product Options Form — variant/option selectors (size, color, etc.)
  • Reviews Summary — star rating and review count
  • Add to Cart Button
  • The default modal layout is a two-column design with the product gallery on the left and details on the right. You can rearrange, add, or remove any of these components.

    Step 2: Targeting

Targeting works identically to the Content Builder. You can target by customer attributes, order details, products in cart, shipping address, traffic source, integrations, and more.

You can also set device targeting (desktop/mobile) and scheduling (day of week, time range, timezone).

See the Content Builder guide for the full targeting reference.

    Step 3: Save

Name your upsell block with a descriptive internal name (e.g., "AI Recommended Products — Checkout Sidebar") and click Save.

    Adding Your Upsell to Checkout

After saving, your upsell block appears in the upsell list. The activation process is the same as content blocks:

  • Find your upsell in the list
  • Click "Add to Checkout" to deploy it
  • Status changes from Pending to Live
  • You can Edit, Duplicate, or Delete any upsell block from the list view.

    Tips

  • AI Recommendations is the easiest product source to start with — it requires zero configuration and adapts to each customer
  • Upsell Strategies give you the most control — use them to create rules like "if the customer has a shirt in their cart, show matching pants"
  • Checkbox Upsell works best for low-cost add-ons (gift wrapping, insurance, samples) — keep it simple and frictionless
  • Progress Bar Upsell is highly effective for free shipping thresholds — customers are motivated to add more when they can see how close they are
  • Customize the product detail modal to match your brand — the default layout works well, but you can rearrange components to emphasize what matters most (e.g., lead with reviews if social proof drives your conversions)
